CICETE supported Hydropower for Today Forum and African Small Hydropower Training Course in Zambia

From November 6-7, the 8th “Hydropower for Today” Forum was held in Lusaka, Zambia. UN Global South-South Development Center Project (SSDC Project), implemented by CICETE, provided support to the forum. The Forum was co-organized by Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Ministry of Energy and Water Development-Zambia and International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP).

The Forum aimed to explore ways of better utilization of the water resources in southeast African countries, promote hydropower development in Africa, and contribute to the development of local production and the improvement of local people’s livelihood.

Mr. Li Jie, the Chinese Ambassador in Zambia, and Prof. Liu Heng, the Senior Technical Expert of UNIDO, attended the forum and delivered speeches. Mr. Wang Annan, the Chief Planner of the Ministry of Water Resources of P. R. China, Ms. Chileshe Kapwepwe, the Secretary General of COMESA, and Mr. Brig. Chola, the Permanent Secretary of the Zambian Ministry of Energy, made remars at the opening ceremony. Totally over 150 participants from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America attended the forum.

During the forum, the three-day Training Seminar on Small Hydropower Development for Africa was held specifically for Zambian hydropower technicians and managing staffs. The seminar was co-sponsored by the project of UNIDO Center for South-South Industrial Cooperation in China (UCSSIC/China), which is implemented by CICETE, COMESA and ICSHP. Representatives from CICETE attended the above activities.
